“cARTography: mindful maps and personal metaphors”

Ryan James Fine Arts, Kirkland, WA

A variety of media is represented in the show including paintings, drawings, prints, textile art, hand-made books and sculpture. Several artists have worked with maps throughout their career, while for others, using maps in their art is a new idea. Art maps in the exhibition explore childhood memories, self-portraits, or the changing urban landscape. While other maps document daily walks, dreams, grocery lists, or a romantic break up.

Curator Dawn Laurant first became interested in mapping when she recorded artifacts at archaeological dig sites in Pakistan and Tunisia, and has collected and worked with maps during her travels and years as a curator.

"The more I study and work with maps, the more I realize they do not convey a single, static objective truth, they are all subjective, displaying information in a wonderful overlap of science, art and technology. There are so many artists integrating maps into their work today, creating their own personal geographies.... I thought it would be an interesting idea for a contemporary art show." - Dawn Laurant
